“BUY BACK BERLIN!” is an interactive map for affected tenants and solidarity organizations. Tenants can insert own entries on the map to visualize their demand for more information and involvement in the case of sale of the building in which they reside, and to where they can find support. In Berlin we ask: Where is the transformation? Berlin‘s tenants are challenged with the threat of iplacement under the pretext of owner-occupancy, or expiring contracts for social bonding of units, or the rise of rents. There is a referendum-proven desire for expropriation/communilization and diverse instruments are needed. Here the municipal right of first refusal could be very helpful in the fight for every single house.
The research project ‘Critical Mapping for Municipalist Mobilization‘ (CMMM), coordinated by K LAB, TU Berlin from 2020-2023, brought together three teams from Barcelona, Belgrade and Berlin who worked together on the topic of housing justice. Among other things and in collaboration with local groups, three maps on different thematic complexes were created: “How (un)affordable is housing in Belgrade?“, “Stop Evictions!“, and “Buy Back Berlin!“
In this session we will present the maps from Berlin and Barcelona, and we will discuss the perception and effectiveness of municipalist initiatives with activists and academics.

Haus der Materialisierung Walking Tour

The House of Materialisation (HdM) is an association of various initiatives and institutions that research, practice and work on the topics of sustainable business and climate-friendly resource use. The House of Materialisation is part of the model project House of Statistics, which has been developed since 2018 by the so-called Koop5 not far from Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. The actors in the House of Materialisation work self-organised, as freelancers or (partially) funded in various associations and business models. Since summer 2021, the Centre for Climate-friendly Resource Use has also been located in the House of Materialisation under the project management of Kunst-Stoffe Berlin, which was developed as part of the Berlin-wide Re-Use Strategy.
The development of the HdM is scientifically accompanied by a three-year research project funded by the DBU: Reallabor Zirkuläres Wirtschaften im städten Kontext, Umweltkommunikation im Haus der Materialisierung in cooperation with the TU, ZUsammeKUNFT Berlin and Material Mafia.

Berlin 21 “Climate neutrality and the creation of housing in existing buildings”. Can’t be done, doesn’t exist!
Direct GHG emissions from the building stock must decrease massively from 2020 to 2030 so that Germany can achieve net GHG neutrality in 2045.
These targets will be missed with the current policy!
Preservation, further development, conversion and reuse of the existing building stock must therefore become priority fields of action for sustainable urban development. Renovation of existing buildings is the key to more affordable housing and climate protection if national and European climate protection goals are to be achieved. However, in order to make practical progress in accordance with the targets, a radical rethink is needed in decisive fields of action of sustainable building and a paradigm shift towards prioritising the conversion and reuse of existing buildings. Only in this way will it be possible at all for Berlin as a federal state to achieve its climate protection goals and make its contribution to the goal of reducing Germany’s GHG emissions from the building stock.

Genossenschaftsforum: “Cooperative Housing in Berlin – How does it work, and how can I make it work for me?” (English language)
Cooperatives are somewhat of an insider-tip for affordable housing in Berlin. Around 100 cooperatives own roughly 200,000 apartments. But what makes them affordable? And how are they different from public and private sector housing? And most importantly: Are they interesting for me, as a solution to my housing wants and needs? Come and find out!
This English language workshop is a one-stop-shop for all your questions about housing cooperatives. It is hosted by the Genossenschaftsforum in their multifunctional work and exhibition space in Berlin Schöneberg. (near Südkreuz). Rathausblock Walking Tour (Meet at Kiezraum, Dragonareal)
Enrico Schönberg (Rathausblock networking meeting) and Katharina Janke-Wagner (Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing) will give a tour of the history of the Rathausblock and the path to the model project and the cooperative collaboration. On the tour, they will explain the urban development concept and the status of implementation of the individual sub-projects – new housing construction, commercial courtyard, social and cultural infrastructure, green and open spaces and current interim uses.

Berlin, along with the world around it, is changing dramatically. This region continues to grow and speculative forces are putting land values and rents beyond the reach of more and more of the population. Affordable community and cooperative housing projects can no longer compete for available land and property. Current challenges are calling for more radical responses in support of social and ecological transformations. The HOUSING_CHANGE_SPACE emphasizes networking necessary to support significant changes to this city’s housing and urban development policies. All are invited to inform themselves regarding self-organized, community and cooperative housing as well as exchange with others and perhaps even find a project to join and work with!
